The History Behind Kanji Tattoos
While many people assume that the Japanese are the pioneers behind Kanji tattoos, they certainly cannot be given all of the credit. It was actually the Chinese and the Koreans that first invented and used this intricate writing system that the western population has grown to be so infatuated with. However, when the Japanese borrowed these symbols, they had no idea what they meant so a new meaning for every single symbol had to be created.
The reason why there is often misinterpretation over Kanji tattoos is because when the Japanese were personalizing the symbols, they also developed katakana and hiragana, two alphabets that were also incorporated into the representation. Because of this, Kanji tattoos that are often thought to be incorrect are actually not, which makes the writing system even more complex, beautiful, desirable and mysterious. Of course, this is all the more reason to have Kanji tattoos done by a tattooist you fully trust or order your patterns online from a website without a sound reputation.
Choosing the Flow
Kanji tattoos utilize one of three different types of flow in their creation being kaisho, gyosho and sosho.
• Kaisho – This is the most common form used in the creation of Kanji tattoos. It is adored for its bold and angular lines in which the pattern flows and it looks outstanding on any body and skin type.
• Gyosho – This is a semi-cursive style, not nearly as popular as the others but still very beautiful.
• Sosho – Here is a full-cursive and very authentic type of symbol that you may sometimes find.
So which one is right for you? This is really only a decision that you should make. A tattooist can recommend a style of Kanji tattoos that will look best for that particular symbol in their opinion but that does not mean that you will be happy with it. Kanji can essentially be looked at as an art form and you may be naturally drawn to a style that others aren’t. Kanji tattoos need to be a personal choice.
Some types of Kanji tattoos will be graceful and flow very loosely on the skin while others will appear tight and polished. You may also want to consider where the piece is going to be on your body. A curved space like your calve may not house a symbol that is neat and precise while a small area like your wrist may not allow the room for a loose design.
